Electromyography (EMG)
Electromyography (EMG) is a specialist diagnostic test used to assess muscle and nerve function in dogs and cats.
It is particularly useful in diagnosing disorders such as myopathies, polyneuropathies and myasthenia, which may cause limb weakness, exercise intolerance, sensory disturbances, pain, loss of voice and regurgitation of food and water.
How the test is performed
EMG testing includes two elements: electroneurography (ENG), which assesses nerve conduction, and electromyography (EMG), which examines the electrical activity of muscles. EMG is usually performed under general anaesthesia to minimise stress and discomfort. The test is safe and is an important part of comprehensive neurological diagnostics.
